All About Fengs Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient art which studies how humans interact with their environment through the point of view of energetic principles. The main objectives are to harmonize the flow of “Qi”, minimize the negative elements and enhance the positive aspects of the interior of the interior and exterior of a home or workplace. It is used to boost energy levels, and make us feel vibrant, alive, and attract abundance of good luck and fortune.

The application of classic Feng Shui developed over the centuries in China is of great use to improve prosperity and health. It was an art used by nobles, kings and emperors to achieve and maintain great power and success in their lives. Intuitive and modern Feng Shui is an excellent tool for personal growth, emotional analysis, as well as interior decoration, among others.

Who is it for? Do you feel overwhelming blockages in your life? Are you clear about your purpose in life? When you set intentions to achieve goals, do you struggle to make them happen? Are you having issues with your relationships? Does your bank account have less money than you would hope for? Are you worried that your problems are not going to go away?

Feng Shui is part of the so-called Five Arts of Far East metaphysics, all of which are governed by the same principles. When studying Feng Shui the student also acquires knowledge of other associated arts such as I Ching, Astrology, Medicine and Food. To discover Feng Shui is to open the door to a new and wonderful world.

……………….

Feng Shui is an ancient art developed in China at least three thousand years ago. It literally means "wind and water" and studies the quality of the “Qi” flow in a house. It also shows how we are all connected to the places where we live and work and how human beings are positively or negatively affected by their surroundings. Feng Shui is rooted in the fundamental concept of Yin-Yang, the two forces of heaven and earth, which is the basis of the far east cosmology.

Once we understand how the Qi flows in a dwelling, we can solve stagnation, increase the positive energy and reduce the negative. After making the necessary corrections, it is possible to solve or improve emotional, financial, professional and health problems. The simple fact of changing the color of a wall, rearranging the furniture or placing natural plants in a certain position, can substantially improve the energy condition of our home and, consequently, of ourselves. The benefits in our life and the way we feel can be quite substantial.

In modern Western society, Feng Shui is fast becoming a valid alternative for an increasing number of people, providing real positive change in their lives. Practical applications in the areas of interior design, architecture, garden design and urban planning, are increasingly sought after by both individuals and companies. Therapists, architects, engineers and designers will also be able to obtain a added skills that are increasingly requested to solve problems in their day-to-day lives.

There are currently two main types of Feng Shui. “Classic” or traditional and modern Feng Shui which was developed in the West in the last 30 years, based on the fusion with different cultures. The Feng Shui Academy provides courses curriculums with both these two forms.

History

Feng Shui is a very ancient art. The term appears for the first time in a classic text "The Book of the Burials" by Guo Pu (276-324 AD). However, the most common term used to describe this art until the beginning of the 20th century was "Kanyu", which means to observe the sky and to observe the earth. Basically the history of Feng Shui can be written in three parts.

The first part is as old as man in the sense that he has always used discernment regarding the places he chose to live in. When he started to build permanent dwellings he had basic concerns such as basic direction, and, in the cold parts of China, the sunny side of the hill. And it was not just the dwellings for the living that aroused interest, but mainly the burial, ie the houses of the dead. The development of the principles of Chinese metaphysics on which Feng Shui is based is also very ancient. Possibly already since the time of Fuxi (~3000 BC), basic concepts such as Form, “Luan Tou”, and Direction “Di Li” were already present. However, the practical application of theoretical principles was limited by the impossibility of measuring direction accurately. Orientations were then obtained by means of of a vertical stick stuck in the ground and measurement of the respective shadow.

The great revolution and possibly the birth of Feng Shui as we know today, occurred with the appearance of the first compass, "Luo Pan". The first Luo Pan appeared at an uncertain date perhaps somewhere in the late Tang dynasty (around 700 AD). It was during that time that the first Great Master of this art, Yang Yung Sun, lived. He is credited with the creation of the 72 Dragons ring. Since then, two distinct schools were. The San He school, “Three Harmonies” which places great importance to the Landform and the San Yuan school (Three Periods) which has time as a fundamental aspect.

Classic Feng Shui was passed on in a process of secrecy that somehow lasts until today. That is why it is practically impossible to make an accurate history of the many calculations known today. However names like Jiang Da Hong (1620-1714) who first mentioned the Xuan Kong system or Tan Yang Wu who established the first school in the first half of the 20th century in Shanghai, are unavoidable figures. During the establishment of the Maoist regime in China, Feng Shui was persecuted and declared illegal, a prohibition that continues today. The best masters emigrated to Chinese communities outside of communist influence such as Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. These areas constituted effectively a Noah's ark of this art.

The third part of the history of Feng Shui begins in the 1980s, with the advent of contemporary Feng Shui. This modern form of Feng Shui was initiated by masters without classical training, the first being Lin Yun, a Tibetan Buddhist monk from Taiwan who emigrated to California and created the Black Hat system. From Black Hat, numerous styles such as Intuitive Feng Shui derived. It is characterized by the fusion of cultures in the global village of today and with roots more or less linked to Chinese culture depending on the style. Modern Feng Shui can be said to be a redefinition and extension of the original concept of Feng Shui.

Bazhai Feng Shui

Ba Zhai literally means Eight (Ba) Houses (Zhai). It is one of the simplest calculations of Feng Shui, and can be used by everbody in the form of a table. In the West this calculation is also referred to as “Eight Mansions”. Ba Zhai considers eight different types of houses, each having its own energetic map, depending on one of the eight possible eight sittings (North, NE, East, etc,). Unlike Flying Stars, these maps do not change with time. This means in this calculation, the time factor is not considered. It is therefore a more suitable calculation for a long-term goals rather than achieving short term results and understand the luck of the house in a particular month or year.

Ba Zhai is based on the Eight Traveling Stars. Each of these stars has its own identity and personality, and is associated with one of the eight trigrams of the I Ching. There are 4 positive stars and 4 negative stars. They either belong to the East group (Water, Wood and Fire stars) or the West group (Metal and Earth stars). On the other hand, each person has a trigram or star which depends on the year of birth, called in Chinese Ming Gua, which also associated with an element and a East or West group. If an individual or house belongs to the East group (Water, Tree or Fire elements) the orientations and sectors of the East group are positive and the directions of the West group (Metal and Soil elements) are unfavorable. And vice versa.

Ba Zhai is said to be an old calculation, maybe 1000 years old, dating back to the Song dynasty or earlier. However, it is only about 300 years ago, in the Ming dynasty, that the first classic on this subject, the Ba Zhai Ming Jing, appeared. Ba Zhai Ming Jing can be translated as "Classic Book Eight Houses Bright Mirror", referring to the (energetic) reflection of the house. Also in the Ming dynasty Chang Ping Lin wrote his classic on this topic called "Method of Opening Doors". This book analyzes 24 houses with sitting in the 24 directions (24 mountains). Each of the 24 poems describes the best locations for the main doors and gates, and then goes on describing the fate of the inhabitants if such configurations are followed.

THE MOST POWERFUL CALCULATION OF YANG FENG SHUI

Flying Stars

Flying Stars are today certainly the most common calculation of classic Feng Shui. They are part of the San Yuan school (Three Periods) and the Xuan Kong system (Mysterious Void). The translation of flying stars into Mandarin is "Fei Xing" so the classic designation for this calculation is Xuan Kong Fei Sin. The main characteristic of the Xuan Kong system is to consider time along with direction the most important factors.

The energetic maps of the house vary according to the move in date of the house (or date of construction in some cases) and the intention or direction the building faces. It considers 9 stars with different characteristics that also vary according to the current period. There are 9 periods in total spanning 20 years each. Also, every year and month different stars "fly" to each of the eight sectors and directions of the house. That is why the favorability of each of the eight sectors and the auspiciousness of the house in general varies with time. A house or room may be favorable in a given year / month and unfavorable in another. Flying stars thus constitute a true "astrology" of the spaces we inhabit. (see below a video on this calculation).

When doing a flying star map, each sector has two main stars called a "combination" that do not change with time. We can call them the birth stars or fixed stars. The first derives from the sitting (orientation of the back of the house) and controls people, health and family life. The second derives from the facing (orientation of the front elevation) and controls aspects such as social life, wealth and prosperity. The favorability of each sector and direction depends on how these two stars interact with each other. The positive or negative aspects are activated by the external form and variable stars (year and month). The Ming Gua of the inhabitants must also be taken into account. Flying star cures have a lot of power and this system can radically change the lives for the better.

The origin of the Flying Stars is shrouded in mystery due to the power of this type of Feng Shui. Some authors trace its roots back to the Han dynasty, almost 2000 years ago. Probably the origin of the calculation goes back to the Song dynasty (1000 AD). Jiang Da Hong at the end of the Ming dynasty (1620-1714) Was the first to make an explicit reference to the Xuan Kong system. The next prominent name is the highly revered master Zhang Zhong Shan (19th century) who said that he was of the direct lineage of Jiang Da Hong and founded the Wu Chang school that practically everyone follows today.

Nowadays, Wu Chang Pai has two main lineages or lines of thought: the first is a what we designate as the written Shen Zhu Reng lineage. Shen Zhu Reng or Master Sam was the one who famously paid a fortune to Zhang Zhong Shan descendants to hold and copy the book with a record of his consultations for one day and one night. The other is an oral lineage through Tan Yang Wu who obtained the knowledge from Yang Jiu Riu, a relative of Zhang Zhong Shan. Tan Yang Wu opened the first public Feng Shui school for selected students in Shanghai in the first half of the last century (see lineage).

SAN HE FENG SHUI

Water Dragons

“Water Dragon” is a generic designation for various calculations of the San He school (Three Harmony school). They are calculations based on the measurement of the so called “Qi Mouth”, ie the point from which the energy comes. The source of energy is traditionally a river or any kind of watercourse. In fact "Water Dragon" literally means "Watercourse" or "Watercourse Energy". However, modernly, the qi or energy that powers a dwelling is more likely to come from a road or path to the main door.

One of the most simple and popular calculations of the Water Dragon is the Upward Water Method that uses a “double mountain” or 12 basic directions, corresponding to the 12 branches/animals of the Chinese zodiac. Each of the 12 directions is associated with a particular energy phase or palace. There are 4 palaces with positive Qi, 4 palaces with negative Qi and 4 palaces with more neutral Qi.

Legend has it that this calculation was created by the first great Feng Shui master, Yang Yung Sun who lived at the end of the Tang dynasty (900 AD). Having worked for a cruel emperor who disapproved of his actions (instead of supporting them with Feng Shui), he decided to flee the imperial court taking the main Feng Shui books from the palace library with him. Wanted to be executed, he took refuge in the province of Canton in southern China, near the current city of Hong Kong. He spent the rest of his life improving the Feng of villages near where he lived. Due to this legend, this type of Water Dragon is also called "method to help the poor", that is to say ordinary citizens less affluent than nobles and emperors. Today, many masters claim to be direct descendants of Yang Yung Sun.

The Water Dragon is used for houses and buildings but not specifically for apartments. In order to be applied, we need to be able to control and change change the exterior space around the house. If not, it becomes just another tool for diagnostic. However, it is very useful for urban planning and organizing the exterior of large complexes such as hospitals, football stadiums, etc. It is a form of "macro" Feng Shui par excellence.
